Centenary Programme

Friday 1 June 2007

Registration for Centenary Weekend, Foyer, Dunedin Town Hall, 8.00am - 9.00am and 4.30pm - 9.00pm (also 9.00am - 1.00pm Saturday)

The Registration Desk will be located in the Dunedin Town Hall, Moray Place, Dunedin. Entrance is only available through the main doors Moray Place (West).

Clinical Excellence Day, Dunedin Town Hall, 9.00am - 4.00pm

The Mission of the Faculty of Dentistry has three components, one of which is “To provide clinical expertise and first-class clinical services to the people of Dunedin and Otago and consultative advice nationally, and in some disciplines internationally”.

The second annual Clinical Excellence Day allows postgraduate students and faculty to present challenging clinical cases and their management. It is an excellent opportunity to see outcomes of a range of clinical procedures across the disciplines of dentistry, and qualifies for CPD points. Refreshments and lunch will be served.

Dental vs Medical Debate, Dunedin Town Hall, 5.30pm - 7.00pm

The Dental vs Medical Debate, debating for the right to hold the Medical Assurance Cup. Chaired by Professor Mark Henaghan, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Otago, this will be an entertaining event, where audience participation and support will be encouraged.

Colgate LogoColgate Welcome Reception, Dunedin Town Hall, 7.00pm - 11.00pm

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago, Professor David Skegg will host the Welcome Reception for the Centenary weekend, which includes an opening by the Mayor of Dunedin, Peter Chin. Refreshments and a light meal will be served while participants relax and reconnect with past and present associates of the Faculty of Dentistry.

School of Dentistry Open House and Memorabilia Displays, Walsh Building, 9.30am - 11.00am

The School of Dentistry Open House is an opportunity to tour the facilities, and view Faculty and student research posters and displays. Memorabilia including Sir John Walsh’s handpiece and other historic items or interest will be on display.

The Open Day will start off officially at approximately 9.30 a.m. in the entrance foyer of the School of Dentistry in Great King Street where there will be Mihi, an official unveiling of a commissioned art work for the Centenary, in the form of a tukutuku panel (wall hanging). This has been woven by Kahutoi Te Kanawa from the School of Maori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies – Te Tumu. Three students representing Dentistry, Oral Health, and Dental Technology will carry out the unveiling and the tukutuku panel will be blessed by the University Chaplain, Greg Hughson.

Following this ceremony there will be a presentation of a painting by Dr Scott Gray, past member of academic staff, to the Dean.

The building will be open to all and morning tea will be served in the Ground Floor Cafeteria during this time.

Halls of Residence Open Hours, 10:00am -12noon

Dental Alumni and registrants are invited to tour their old Halls of Residence, details of open hours will be provided in the registration bag.

Ivoclar Vivadent Centenary Dinner, Dunedin Town Hall, 7.00pm - Late

Ivoclar Vivadent LogoThe main celebratory event of the Centenary weekend, the Centenary Dinner sponsored by Ivoclar Vivadent, will have Master of Ceremonies John Twaddle, dentist and raconteur, as well as a variety of entertainment throughout the evening. Held in Dunedin’s historic Town Hall, the formal dinner includes a three-course meal and wine, and will be an event to remember.

Nobel Biocare LogoProfessor Jules Kieser is a forensic dentist, and the Head of the Oral Sciences Department in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago.
